Preposition

A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence. They act to connect the people, objects, time and locations of a sentence.  Prepositions are usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front of nouns. In some cases, you’ll find prepositions in front of gerund verbs. Examples of Preposition; in, at, of, to, by, behind, on, with, etc.

Object of a Preposition

The object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun governed by a preposition. The object of a preposition is usually the noun or pronoun after the preposition.

Untuk mengerjakan soal TOEFL kita harus menemukan verb utamanya terlebih dahulu, pada kalimat di atas kita temukan verb found. Kemudian sebelum kata his friend diawali dengan preposisi with, maka dapat dinyatakan bahwa his friend bukan merupakan subject. Kemudian kita harus membutuhkan 1 buah subjek untuk mengisi blank pada soal di atas, maka jawabannya adalah B.

2. With my mother ... went to the theater last night.
     a. go
     b. gone
     c. car
     d. I
Pada soal di atas temukan went sebagai verb utamanya. Kemudian pada kalimat with my mother, my mother bukankah subject peranan diawali dengan preposisi with. Kemudian kita membutuhkan 1 subject, maka jawaban yang tepat adalah D.

3. Behind the door ... found her jacket.
     a. has
     b. later
     c. he
     d. went
Pada soal di atas kita menemukan verb utamanya yaitu found. Kemudian behind the door merupakan object of preposition, maka kita membutuhkan sebuah subject yaitu he dan jawabannya adalah C.

4. To Dea ... was a big surprise.
     a. funny
     b. really
     c. went
     d. the party
Kalimat diatas was merupakan verb utama. Kemudian Dea bukanlah sebuah subjek karena diawali dengan kata proposisi to, sehingga to dea merupakan object of preposition. Pada kalimat di atas dibutuhkan sebuah subjek yaitu the party, maka jawabannya adalah D.

5. In writing in English ... try to predict readers needs.
     a. books
     b. go
     c. authors
     d. funny
Kalimat diatas try merupakan verb utama. Kemudian In writing dan in English bukanlah sebuah subjek karena diawali dengan kata proposisi in, sehingga merupakan object of preposition. Pada kalimat di atas dibutuhkan sebuah subjek yaitu authors, maka jawabannya adalah C.
